Secrets for successful house painting

House painting is the fastest and easiest way to refresh it and change its aura. A house can be refreshed internally as well as externally and just with the choice of a modern color scheme its style will be updated.

Adverse weather conditions can affect the condition of interior and exterior walls, as well as the roof. For example, humidity contributes to the appearance of stains, swelling, peeling and mold growth which is harmful to the health of the residents. Repainting is one case of home restoration, as long as you know a few secrets to get the right result.

House painting preparation secrets

First, the surfaces to be painted must be freed of loose materials and the places where the old paint does not adhere to the plaster must be removed. The worn areas must then be cleaned and any holes must be sealed with repair mortar if they are large or repaired with putty if they are small.

Then the surfaces are thoroughly cleaned of dirt, mold, any white “fluff” or small bubbles and must be completely dry. If the surfaces are shiny from the previous color, they should be sanded to achieve good adhesion of the new color to the old one.

In some cases, the application of a primer must be preceded in order to stabilize the new color with proper dilution so that the primer penetrates the wall. The primer and paint packaging states the dilution ratio, which must be followed. Painting must be done with tools suitable for each house painting situation (rollers, brushes) which must be of good quality and in good condition.

Gikas painters strictly follow the instructions for the weather conditions that should prevail even if it is an interior painting project and also for the time that should elapse between two consecutive coats. Professional painters usually avoid temperatures lower than 5°C and higher than 35°C and atmospheric humidity higher than 70%.

How do we deal with the problems on the walls before proceeding with house painting?

Molds in the form of black spots are created in places with increased humidity and in places or spaces (behind curtains and furniture) that are not properly ventilated. The cause of the damp should be treated first and then the surface should be sprayed with a fungicidal liquid and afterwards painted with preferably also fungicidal paint.

Bubbles and white fluff are due to moisture that either enters through capillary cracks in the wall or are present in the masonry and, coming out, carries with it the salts from the brick mortar or plaster. In this case too, the problem causing the moisture must be repaired and then the salts must be removed by mechanical abrasion and the surface washed with clean water. Once the surface is thoroughly dry, it should be primed and then painted in two layers with the final color.

There is a case that after painting in some places it appears that the color has not covered (scratches) the wall completely. This is due to various reasons, such as choosing a paint with low coverage, too much thinning of the paint, poor quality paint roller.

It may also be caused when the new shade is either lighter than the existing one or is intense and does not have much coverage. In this case painters will paint one more layer. The case that stucco is visible after house painting is also due to various causes, such as not having been sanded, not primed, the paint not having coverage or being too thinned. Local primer and two coats of paint are required.

A frequent problem that amateurs face is the “running” of paint. This is due either to the application of a thick layer of paint or to excessive thinning, but also to high humidity painting conditions. The problem will be solved if the paint is fresh, and painters pass the roller where there are “runs” with direction from bottom to top. If the paint has dried, the area should be rubbed off and repainted.

Finally, be careful to repaint with the same type of color as the existing one. If you want plastic paint to be applied to an existing watercolor, Gikas painters will definitely apply a primer first and then paint.

After all these cases we have mentioned you should understand that house painting requires a specialized workshop. You can request a quote from Gikas Painting who offers affordable home restoration services and has experienced and reliable workshops.
